Go Deeper with Buddhism through Saturday Study - starts March 17, 2018

Ozarks Dharma Community is happy to announce a new Saturday Study, every third Saturday of the month starting March 17, 2018. Led by ODC Facilitators, Saturday Study will explore the Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path.

What are the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path?

The Buddha taught about “dukkha”, an ancient Indian word frequently translated as suffering. However, dukkha can also be translated as stress, unsatisfactory, unease, out-of-joint, out-of-synch, etc.

The Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths that: dukkha occurs; dukkha is caused by craving, which arises out of ignorance, attachment and aversion; dukkha ceases; and we can cultivate an Eightfold Path that leads to the cessation of dukkha.

That path entails a practice by which we can learn to pay attention to and become skillful in eight inter-related domains of our behavior: views, intention, speech, conduct, livelihood, effort, concentration, and mindfulness.

How does Saturday Study work?

In Saturday Study, Ozarks Dharma Community will explore the Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path in more detail with those who wish to participate.

We will meet for Saturday Study after meditation every third Saturday of the month, starting March 17, 2018. We anticipate each meeting will last about 45 minutes. The meeting location will be upstairs in the conference room at the National Avenue Christian Church.

Saturday Study will also have a private Facebook group where class participants can interact with one another about what we are learning in between monthly meetings.

Our first meeting on March 17, 2018 will be an introductory session to get organized.

For this Saturday Study series, we will work with six recorded talks by an American Buddhist teacher, Upasaka Culadasa (John Yates, Ph.D.), as our primary source material. Culadasa has practiced Buddhist meditation for over four decades. He also taught physiology and neuroscience at the university level for many years. Culadasa currently leads the Dharma Treasure Buddhist Sangha in Tucson, Arizona. Their website can be accessed at dharmatreasure.org.

The six talks we will use for the study are the Dharma Treasure Curriculum, Part 7 (first talk on Four Noble Truths) through Part 12 (last talk on Eightfold Path). These talks can be accessed at https://dharmatreasure.org/section/dharma-talks/curriculum/.

Each month, Saturday Study participants will listen on their own to the Culadasa talk assigned for that month, outside of class and before class meets. We will then meet to discuss the relevant talk. While Saturday Study will be facilitated by an ODC facilitator, we are looking for a group discussion that engages the participants. Participants can also share their thoughts and experience on the Saturday Study facebook page.
